Research Notes

Somerby Fraud

This person is part of a false pedigree of William Arnold, the immigrant to New England, created by Horatio G. Somerby in 1870. Individual parts of the pedigree may be correct, but many of the parts are incorrect and false. Somerby's fraud is described in detail at False Arnold Pedigree.

If the bogus pedigree were the only place in which Meurig appears, then I could see the point. On the other hand, if we can be reasonably sure he existed, any number of fake 20th century pedigrees should not affect this.

It's disturbing to me that in the pedigree of a Welshman who would be ancestor to any number of people in the UK and elsewhere, including myself, his entire biography is filled up with relatively modern Americans instead of information about his own life and times.

Monica, I concur with your distaste for the contamination of profiles by frauds. Unfortunately, when a fraud was published in a book over a hundred years ago and received as truth by numerous people, it has to be addressed.

In the case of these profiles, the ilnformation about the fraud has been more easily accessible than actual facts about the Welsh nobility who were affected. The frauds have to be addressed, but the challenge is now to find real information to take precedence. These things take time.

And the bulk of the information about the fraud is indeed on its own free-space page, which is linked to this and other affecteed profiles.

I'm just suggesting that the biography be reserved for his biography and the contents relocated. But I'm pleased that there is a linked page for the bulk of the data. Not sure if that was the case before, if so, then I didn't see it.
Some of the material in the free space profile hadn't yet been removed from the person-profile. I"ve fixed that. Also, the fact that this is a pre-1500 profile with a controlled group of users means that the volume level of warnings can be turned down!

Thanks, Jack! I think this works better.
update - merge completed

Ab Ynyr Gwent-2 and Ab Ynyr Gwent-1 appear to represent the same person because: Jack - These profiles look to be duplicates but one says he's part of a false pedigree and one doesn't. Are they different? If so - how? It looks like duplicate profiles are attached as his son also - and duplicate profiles for one grandson.

There is a 35 year difference in birth date according to https://www.geni.com/people/Ynyr-King-of-Gwent/6000000003649751976

Boyer is a more reliable source than Geni, which is often unsourced!

I'm thinking it would be preferable to put the data regarding the bogus pedigree on a separate linked page, or at least in a very concise note at the end of the profile in a research notes section, as neither Arnold nor Somerby affect the existence of Meiric Ynir and are only tangentially relevant to his profile. This goes for any Welsh individuals cited in the bogus pedigree. A relatively recent American pedigree is surely the least significant thing in the biographies of 12th century Welshmen, but here it takes over the centre stage.

The problem with fraud is that it taints everything it touches. Therefore every single profile touched by a fraud is subject to more scrutiny and documentation than otherwise might have been the case.
